The role of the altar server is to assist the priest at Mass and other
ceremonies. Assisting a priest saying Mass is one of the greatest honors that
lay people can undertake.
At Holy Spirit, at the end of the fifth grade, boys and girls may volunteer to
become servers with the approval of their parents and the pastor. Accepted as an
altar server, the youths must take training and be committed to serving at Mass
when assigned. In addition to training, the candidate is required to serve at
least four times as an intern before becoming an altar boy or girl. |

There are four steps required after being accepted into the ministry and the
initial training. Beginning with step one, the new server will walk in
procession and observe the roles played by the other servers. Being mentored by
the eighth grade servers, the younger servers will work their way through the
other steps until reaching step four when they will become full fledge altar
servers. While the senior servers guide the candidates through their training,
they continue observing the performance of the younger altar boys and girls on
the altar serving to maintain an acceptable standard of service at Mass. |
